Granny Squares...

Hello Everyone, How are you? Well I hope! I've a bit quiet here as I've been busy with the two e-courses I mentioned about previously, as well as enjoying summer!

As part of the Together course, we spent a couple of weeks writing lists of what was working and not working in our lives, then we worked on physically and mentally clearing clutter that's preventing us from being creative. Next we were enjoined to make creativity our highest priority and create something. I've been jotting ideas in a notebook, and one idea that emerged was to crochet an afghan blanket, which came as a surprise to me. I have not crocheted anything since I was a teenager, which was quite a while ago now.

In the end, I decided to have a go, and discovered that the idea to make granny squares was really an inspired choice. Almost all the work I've done in recent years has been computer based. I re-discovered how much I really enjoyed the process of making things with my hands. I started off by using some old balls of yarns that I had at home, but was put off by the old fashioned colours, so I bought new yarns in nice, modern colours that make me feel happy. I was also inspired by the 3D floral squares I saw on at Meet Me At Mikes, and I had a lot of fun learning how to make them from a book I had at home. I guess I need to work on trusting my intuition/guidance from within and give ideas a try before being too self critical, however odd they may seem at first.

In the Blogging Your Way course, Leslie from A Creative Mint has been showing us how to take close up photos at home, bearing in mind lighting, angles, f-stops etc. I bought a new camera late last year, but only used the auto setting. I'm such a dummy that I didn't even know what an f-stop was, let alone how to adjust it! Of course, I didn't read the manual.

For these shots, I used the aperture priority mode with f-stop 5 setting for all shots except the first one which was f-stop 10. So here are pictures of my attempt at making granny squares and taking nicer photos! Thanks for looking and hope you are all having a fabulous weekend! :)

Inspired by Kim Parker - artist and designer

I bought a book last year called Kim Parker Home which I keep in my wardrobe. It probably seems like an odd place for a book, but I put it there for safekeeping, as I love this book so much that I want to keep it looking brand new! Whenever I flip through the pages and gaze at Kim's beautiful designs, I always feel really inspired & uplifted.

Kim Parker is a self taught artist and designer who trained as a classical flautist but gave up her musical career to become an artist. She worked for seven years as a textile designer in industry before taking the big step of launching her own design label. I especially love Kim's paintings of flowers. The motifs and the vibrant colours used are dynamic and lively, and exude so much passion and joy! Her designs can be found in fashion, home decor and tableware.

Kim delights in the beauty of the world surrounding her and draws inspiration from it. She writes that she sees "patterns, rhythms and colour stories wherever I go." When designing, she never plans anything beforehand, and she doesn't think or paint in repeat. She loves the process of hand painting and improvising, and doesn't use the computer at all. She believes that the designs stays more fresh this way. I think its wonderful that she can simply let the designs emerge from her creative imagination and paint so freely. Her philosophy is to create interior spaces that are like healing gardens. I love this concept and think it sounds really nurturing.

When I look at Kim's artwork I feel moved to pick up my paint brushes too. In fact I just enrolled to take oil painting classes and will start in February. I can't wait! What do you think? I hope you are as inspired by Kim's work as I am, and have a happy weekend :)

There is a youtube video of Kim Parker's paintings.

Blogging Your Way, Jan 2010

Last year in April 2009, I took the Blogging Your Way e-course, run by Holly Becker, whose hugely successful design blog, decor8, is a source of inspiration for many people. I wrote about the previous BYW class that I took here. Holly has a very warm personality, and is very generous with sharing her knowledge and experiences as a blogger. I decided to re-sit the class as a refresher. I also jumped at the chance to learn styling tips from Leslie Shewring, A Creative Mint, who is an awesome colour and product styling expert. I was also keen to meet some more new friends in the blogging community. The class starts next week and I can't wait...!

So I'm actually taking two classes at once, this one and the Together e-course, which I wrote about in my last post. I hope I'm not taking too much on board, but I thought it would be a great way to start the year. So if you are visiting from Blogging Your Way, hello, welcome to my blog and thanks for dropping by. Nice to meet you and see you in class! :)

Together e-course by Creative Thursday

Last year I participated in an e-course run by Marisa Haedike called In the Fishbowl. I wrote about it here. Marisa is an artist, educator and founder of Creative Thursday, who found success with an online shop, a blog, and conducting e-courses.

I'm excited to share with you all that I've enrolled to do another e-course called Together :: 2 persepctives :: on how to live a creatively fullfilling life, also run by Marisa Haedike, together with her partner Sean Hogan. Sean is a screenwriter and teacher at the Groundlings Theater.

I enjoyed the Fishbowl course with Marisa so much that when she announced the new Together course, I signed up straight away . The course content includes:

How do you...
Tune into what you truly want in your life?
Jump-start creative inspiration when you feel stuck?
Create work that you love that also supports you financially?
Stick with it on the days when you don't know where all this is headed?
Stay open to changing course?
Eliminate distractions to keep a clear focus?
Maintain balance between your personal and work life?
Support others in following their dreams while staying true to your own?
Remember to have fun and not take it all too seriously or personally?

At the moment, I am in the process of re-discovering myself. So this course has come at a good time for me.

If you're visiting from the Together e-course, hello, welcome to my blog, and thank you for visiting! Looking forward to learning, sharing and being inspired by our teachers and each other over the next few weeks!

2010 New Year's Resolutions

Dear All, I'm sorry that things have been quiet around here. I'm still in holiday mode. But all good things must come to an end, and I'm slowly getting back in to the swing of things now.

The wonderful thing about January is that its a time that's heralds promise, hope and an opportunity for a fresh start. And at the moment, I feel that the year stretches out before me like a blank canvas..!! I'm not very good with writing out new years resolutions and sticking to them, (as I'm not keen on lists) but I've noticed that many conscientious bloggers have posted their lists, and I thought I might do the same, as it might help me to stay motivated and be accountable this year!

They are not in any particular order, and here goes:

Focus on my creative journey and create!
Be inspired by nature and the world around me
Meditate and pray more often
Drink more water
Exercise
Trust my intuition
Be open to divine guidance
Spend time in nature
Read more
Help others
Try not to procrastinate so much...
Be grateful and give thanks more often
Bury lingering resentments and negative feelings from last year and move on!
Try not to sweat the small stuff
Practice being more self reliant
Do what brings me joy and discover more activities that bring joy
Be true to myself
Make new friends
Try to live a balanced life
Have fun!

Some of my plans for 2010:

Enrol in creative online e-courses
Study sociology
Learn how to use my new dslr camera and take nice photos
Do some travelling
Start oil painting again
Get back in to sewing
Give my blog a makeover
Clean out my workspace and re-organise it
Start an online store
Have a book sale
Continue to work on establishing a beautiful garden & learn more about organic/urban gardening/farming
Participate in a walkathon

What are your new years resolutions and plans? Whatever they are, I wish you all the best as you embark on your personal journey this year, (and decade), and wishing you much success and fulfillment!

The beautiful images in this post come from the Flora and Fauna 2010 calendar published and distributed by Cavallini and Co. The first image is the front cover, and the second image is the January picture. As the calendar was too large for my scanner, the images were cropped.

The 2010 image was adapted from the cover of my 2010 kikki-k A6 cute diary.
